The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has commended the establishment of three AI Centres of Excellence (CoE), emphasizing their pivotal role in advancing key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable cities. These CoEs are set to drive innovation, boost productivity, and enhance quality of life through cutting-edge AI solutions tailored to address critical challenges in these areas.
The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, has praised the establishment of three new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centres of Excellence (CoE) as a transformative milestone in the country’s journey toward becoming a global leader in technology, innovation, and AI. These CoEs, focused on healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable cities, will spearhead cutting-edge research and practical AI applications to address some of the nation’s most pressing challenges. In response to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by the Union Minister of Education, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, the Prime Minister expressed his confidence in these CoEs, stating that they would not only benefit India’s youth (Yuva Shakti) but also position the country as a hub for futuristic growth.
The announcement of these Centres of Excellence is a significant step in aligning with the government’s “Viksit Bharat” vision, which seeks to foster an inclusive and technologically advanced India. Spearheaded by top educational institutions such as AIIMS, IIT Delhi, IIT Ropar, and IIT Kanpur, in collaboration with industry partners and startups, these CoEs will focus on interdisciplinary research to develop scalable AI solutions that can improve healthcare delivery, enhance agricultural productivity, and drive urban sustainability.
At the official inauguration, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted these Centres’ critical role in realizing India’s AI potential. Accompanied by prominent figures such as Secretary of Higher Education, Shri K. Sanjay Murthy, Zoho Corporation CEO, Shri Sridhar Vembu, and other esteemed industry and academic leaders, Shri Pradhan underscored the significance of this collaboration between government, industry, and academia. Plaques and saplings were symbolically presented to AIIMS and the IITs, reinforcing their commitment to advancing AI-led solutions.
Key Focus Areas of the AI Centres of Excellence
Healthcare:
AI will be leveraged to revolutionize diagnostics, treatment planning, and patient care by developing advanced tools for disease detection, personalized medicine, and efficient healthcare delivery models.
Agriculture:
By integrating AI technologies, the agriculture sector will benefit from precision farming, enhanced yield predictions, and data-driven decision-making tools to optimize resource use and crop management.
Sustainable Cities:
AI solutions will address urban challenges such as waste management, energy efficiency, traffic control, and infrastructure sustainability, aiming to build smarter, more sustainable cities.
The initiative, with a financial outlay of Rs. 990 Crore over five years (2023-24 to 2027-28), reflects the Government’s commitment to fostering a robust AI ecosystem under the “Make AI in India and Make AI Work for India” campaign. The creation of the CoEs was first outlined in the 2023-24 Budget under Para 60, further underscoring its importance as a national priority.
An Apex Committee, co-chaired by industry stalwart Dr. Sridhar Vembu, has been formed to oversee the successful implementation of these Centres. This committee will bring together thought leaders and stakeholders from various sectors to ensure CoEs deliver impactful and scalable AI innovations.
Establishing these AI Centres of Excellence marks a pivotal moment in India’s technological evolution, demonstrating its commitment to integrating AI into its national development framework.
