AI Unlocks Early Clues to Alzheimer’s Through Retinal Scans

Researchers have developed Eye-AD, an AI model that uses eye scans to detect early signs of Alzheimer’s and dementia. The retina, which shares similarities with the brain, shows subtle changes in tiny blood vessels linked to cognitive decline. Eye-AD analyzes high-resolution images from Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA), a non-invasive eye imaging technology, to identify these changes and predict conditions like early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease (EOAD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

The model combines advanced AI techniques to examine retinal layers and blood flow, achieving high accuracy in detecting EOAD (AUC of 0.9355) and reasonable accuracy for MCI (AUC of 0.8630). Trained on thousands of images using NVIDIA GPUs, Eye-AD offers a cost-effective, quick, and non-invasive way to screen for dementia, making early diagnosis more accessible. Future plans include testing on diverse populations and integrating it with other diagnostic tools for clinical use.
