OpenAI has announced its new AI models, o3 and o3-mini, as the next big step in reasoning and problem-solving. The smaller o3-mini model is expected by the end of January, while the full o3 will come later. These models aim to outshine previous ones, with o3 breaking records in coding, math, and science tests. It even scored higher than OpenAI’s Chief Scientist in competitive programming and solved 25% of the toughest math problems, compared to 2% by other models. OpenAI skipped launching an “o2” model to avoid a potential copyright issue with the British company O2. Currently, o3 is undergoing safety testing, and researchers can apply to test it until January 10.
